Despite continued gender disparity in engineering, girls are edging ahead in biomedical engineering interest.
The Institute of Mechanical Engineers’ (IMechE) The Future is Engineering: What Young People Really Think report suggests a key takeaway is that although gender disparity persists, girls are reported to be developing a growing interest in biomedical engineering.
This is while interest in engineering continues to grow across most disciplines, with aerospace and aviation the most popular sectors (1.73%), closely followed by mechanical engineering (1.70%).
Girls are picking up the pace in the less popular areas of the field.
Matthew Rooney, Head of Engineering Policy and Impact at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, says, ‘Engineering is changing, and young people are changing with it. The stereotype that engineering is only about engines, factories and hard hats is disappearing.
‘Today's engineers are designing life-saving medical devices, developing artificial intelligence, transforming healthcare and tackling some of society's biggest challenges. It's encouraging to see more girls recognising that engineering offers exciting careers where they can make a real difference.’
