University of Glasgow, only one of two Russell Group universities in Scotland, has recently launched a very exciting new initiatives for the Ph.D. program, called ‘Partnership Ph.D. program’, which aims to work together with the Scottish / UK industries to work on core problems of industry through co-supervision of academic and industrial partners.

The advantages of the partnership Ph.D. program includes:

1) The rate charged to both UK/international employees at the Scottish/UK companies will be the home student tuition rate

2) Participants will benefit from being able to stay in their workplace while they study. There will be no need to leave their company to commence their studies. Students will be able to focus on industry R & D problems. The programme is set up to allow for regular visits and meetings and progress reviews

3) The programme offers flexibility in both duration and start time. Participants can choose either a full-time (3-4 years) or a part-time (more than 6 years) PhD study

The application process will be open throughout the year; the programme offers a flexibility, a start date can be arranged to suit both parties

4) It is anticipated that two academic supervisors and one industry supervisor will work together on the core common problem of the industry, giving advantages of sharing knowledge and experience and will lead to greater links between industry & academia and will hopefully lead to future collaborations.

Dr. Jun Young Cheong, who is currently a fellow of the Institution of Engineers in Scotland (IES) & Reader at James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow, is willing to discuss with companies that are affiliated with IES on this wonderful opportunity and assist/coordinate in providing suitable academic supervisors to initiate the partnership, so please feel free to e-mail him directly at JunYoung.Cheong@glasgow.ac.uk for any further queries & assistance. Dr Cheong is keen to assist and interact with members of IES and to develop further partnerships
