IES - The Rankine Memorial Lecture - The Challenges and Opportunites at Scotrail Engineering

10th November 2026 6:30 pm

This is a joint event with IMechE

From modernising behind the scenes in depots across the country to make our Victorian infrastructure ready for modern rolling stock, to upgrading the legacy fleet to improve reliability and passenger comfort. ScotRail’s engineering team recognise the scale of the challenge and opportunity facing us over the next decade as new trains are brought into service to replace legacy fleet.

How can engineering help to improve the experience for passengers? What are the future aspirations for the service and what part will engineering play?

Barbara McIntyre is the Engineering Director for Scotrail. The engineering directorate is responsible for providing safe, clean, comfortable, reliable trains into service every day.

Barbara joined ScotRail as Engineering Director in April 2025, she is a chartered engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

Barbara has broad engineering and leadership experience across a range of sectors with leadership experience in heavy engineering, shipbuilding and rolling stock.
