IStructE - Architectural innovation through base isolation and exposed concrete

25th August 2026 6:00 pm

This presentation provides an overview of a landmark cultural project, highlighting its architectural ambition and the advanced structural engineering strategies that underpin its realisation. Designed by Atelier Peter Zumthor, the new LACMA building features an organically shaped, exposed-concrete structure supported by ten towers. To withstand significant seismic activity, the structure utilises a horizontal isolation system featuring Triple Friction Pendulum Isolators and non-linear vertical dampers. This continuous, monolithic building lacks expansion joints, requiring specialised construction sequencing to mitigate cracking potential.

This presentation explores the engineering challenges and innovative structural solutions—from complex concrete framing to advanced seismic protection—that realised this ambitious project in a high-risk earthquake zone.
