IChemE - Keeping The Lights On - How to Deal with Wind and Solar Energy Intermittency

4th March 2026 12:00 pm

This technical seminar is about keeping the lights on post-2030.

By 2030, the UK Clean Power plan requires about 60% of grid electricity to be supplied by inherently intermittent wind and solar sources. The estimated ‘flexible power’ required to overcome the supply variability will rise from the current value of 25 GW to over 200GW by 2050. It is recognised that long and short term energy storage solutions are important features of the programme.

The seminar will describe a range of proposed energy storage technologies of interest to chemical engineers. It will include, for example, compressed air, hydrogen and batteries
