RAeS - HMS Gannet - The last year of Military SAR

The February 2026 Lecture will be of particular local interest to Branch members and guests. HMS Gannet SAR Flight stood up after 819 Sqn decommissioned operating three dedicated Sea King helicopters in the military and civilian Search and Rescue (SAR) role across Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland. The crews covered an area of approximately 81,000 square miles from Ben Nevis in the north, Isle of Man to the south, east to Edinburgh and extended 200 miles west of Ireland over the north Atlantic.
Consistently one of the busiest SAR units in the UK, in 2015, the final year of dedicated military SAR in the UK, the flight was again the busiest SAR unit, with its running total being higher than all other units.
