Safety Leadership - a moral and ethical imperative

Dame Judith Hackitt DBE will discuss a number of serious accidents, lessons learned and the need for a safety culture driven by doing the right thing rather than slavish rule following

Dame Judith has a passion for engineering and manufacturing, led an independent review of building regulations after Grenfell and is currently, among other roles, Interim Chair of the Office for Nuclear Regulation. Dame Judith was a Non-Executive Director on the Board of HS2 until January 2024 and a former Chair of a number of organisations including the Health and Safety Executive, the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, the manufacturing trade body Make UK (formerly EEF) and Enginuity (an engineering and manufacturing skills body).

Dame Judith’s current positions include a directorship at Ingeniators, an advisor on Building Standards for the UK Government, and Independent Chair of HS2’s Health, Safety and Security Committee.

She previously held non-executive positions at Made Smarter Commission, Imperial College Court, City & Guilds Group, and High Value Manufacturing Catapult. An engineer by profession, Dame Judith holds a degree in chemical engineering from Imperial College, London and 11 Honorary Doctorates.
