The Institution of Structural Engineers is pleased to announce its 2022 Gold Medallist as Naeem Hussain FREng, CEng, FIStructE.

An internationally inspiring engineer whose designs combine beautiful form with function, Naeem has made major contributions to bridge design on a global scale which reflect his background in both architecture and engineering, making him the stand-out candidate for the 2022 award.

Naeem’s work has included the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, Shenzhen Bay Bridge in Hong Kong, Brunei Temburong Bridge, the multi awardwinning Hulme Arch Bridge in Manchester, and the highly acclaimed Queensferry Crossing in Scotland, which was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Major Project Award.

As well as involvement in some of the world’s largest infrastructure projects, Naeem has also engineered and managed some of the UK’s unique engineering landmarks, such as the Medway Bridge on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. Naeem has worked on road and rail bridges, viaducts and railway stations in Hong Kong, China, Korea, Vietnam, Maldives, India, South Africa, Turkey, and USA.

A Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences) he was awarded the Prince Philip Medal, the Royal Academy of Engineering’s highest individual award for his ground-breaking work on some of the world’s most iconic bridges. He was inducted into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame in 2016.

The IStructE Gold Medal is the Institution’s highest individual honour and is awarded for personal contributions to the advancement of structural engineering. Arrangements are under way for Naeem Hussain to deliver his 2022 Gold Medal address at the Institution’s Headquarters in London, UK on October 20th.
