The Royal Society of Edinburgh has joined 18 Commonwealth science academies to urge their nations’ leaders to work together to take coordinated and equitable action to address climate change, biodiversity loss and other critical and related sustainability challenges.

The call, made in a joint letter to Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland, draws on recommendations shared with the Commonwealth Heads of Government in a joint statement and a joint letter in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Failing to tackle these issues in the increasingly narrowing timescale will pose significant risks to human development, welfare, societal inequities and inequalities.

We wish the Rt Hon Baroness Scotland QC success with the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali from 20-26 June 2022, and stand ready to work with you.
