The IET’s annual Santa Loves STEM campaign is back this year with an online hub of festive-themed engineering and technology activities – to help inspire the next generation to pursue science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) careers.

Dubbed ‘Santa’s STEM workshop’, the online hub is packed full of inspiring ideas for teachers and families to do with children in the lead up to and over the festive holiday season.

Hosted on the IET’s Education website, children can join Santa and his helpers to make, create, imagine, and discover this Christmas.

Activities include fun craft ideas, recipes, hands-on experiments, and resources, which provide STEM-inspired learning through play.

David Lakin, IET Head of Education, said: “To mark Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, we are delighted to be launching our IET Santa Loves STEM campaign once again for 2021.

This is such an important campaign that aims to spark children’s interest in STEM in a festive and heart-warming way.

There continues to be a huge shortfall of young people taking up careers in engineering and technology and we believe one of the main barriers to this is not capturing the creative and curious minds of children from a young age.”

Children can try their hand at some festive baking with marshmallow snowballs or flex their creative writing skills with a poem to Santa.

For those passionate about climate change, there is a fun experiment for children to help Santa examine how heat passes through animals who need to insulate as well as information on affordable and recycled STEM toys.

From electric dough experiments to snow globe making, there is an array of ideas to suit 4–13-year-olds.
