RIS - Rethinking the origins of plate tectonics
12th May 2025 7:00 pm
Our knowledge of the structure of the Earth has improved vastly over the last 100 years. It can be tempting to assume that objective research following the scientific method is immune to outside influence, but history suggests otherwise. How has our understanding of oceans and tectonic plates been swayed by money? Money, after all, is power.
Acclaimed geologist and historian of science Naomi Oreskes delves into the history of tectonic plate research, and unpacks how money has guided new discoveries, from naval oceanography through to present day climate change.
