RRS Discovery – Repair and restoration

9th December 2024 6:30 pm

Joint meeting with RINA

Presented by Mr Ali Gellatly, Ship and Facilities Director, Dundee Heritage Trust

At 123 years old, the Royal Research Ship Discovery is currently undergoing a significant conservation project; £1.4 million of work to her stern and areas of the deck, funded by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
The restoration is not following the traditional restoration path using a Shipwright company- instead using an industrial restoration company. This presentation will give a brief history of the ship, its
use and ownership up to today. It will also discuss the restoration, and the new technologies being used to survey, preserve and repair the ship in the most non invasive way possible.
There will be discussion on the approach to the restoration and how historical research into previous restorations have been implemented into the project.

CPD Certificates will be available for this meeting.

Guests and visitors are welcome to attend this meeting.
