ICE - The Belgian Tunnelling Method and its use in the Madrid Metro

1st September 2022 6:00 pm

With a history of over 100 years the Belgian method has revolutionized tunnel construction. Making it the preferred technique for the expansions of Madrid Metro since 1917 this method consists of a series of very specific steps.

The Belgian method uses a unique excavation sequence that comprises the division of the crown in a series of pocket excavations that are successively supported by a combination of struts, waler beams and wood planks, and directly followed by typically, an unreinforced concrete lining installation.

Join us on this evening’s lecture to learn how AYESA’s latest design approaches enhance our understanding of this historic tunnelling method.
