IMechE - Tribology and the Journey to Net-Zero: on-road and off-road transportation
30th June 2022 12:00 pm
The goal of net-zero carbon is the challenge of our generation, and every industry is refocusing its strategy to meet this challenge. Tribology is a huge enabler in this mission, from increasing efficiency (and mitigating carbon emissions) to enabling new technologies that will enable us to reach net-zero.
In 2019, domestic transport was responsible for emitting 122 MtCO2e (million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent). This means transport is the largest emitting sector of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, producing 27% of the UK’s total emissions in 2019 (455 MtCO2e).

However, 2021 was the most successful year in history for electric vehicle uptake as more new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered than over the previous five years combined. The rapid rise of low carbon transportation solutions is upon us, bringing new technology challenges across the value chain.

While Tribology has always played an important role in transportation, the nature of the technical challenge is rapidly changing. Originally, it was all about friction and wear. Now it’s about friction, wear, cooling, cleaning, compatibility, electrical properties, sustainability, emissions…what’s next? And how are we, as a Tribology community, rising to this challenge? This live online seminar will shine a light on this growing transformation, and the important role that Tribology will play in enabling this journey.
Join this online event to:
- Gain insight into the technical tribological challenges facing the transportation sector’s journey to net-zero
- Develop your understanding of industrial solutions to these challenges and who is working on them
