18th May 2022 7:00 pm
Electric Vehicles have been in continuous use for over 100 years, yet there is now considerable interest in private electric vehicles primarily due to the impressive improvement in battery technology over the last 30 years. Today the promise is that new developments will overcome the cost and functionality issues. There are also fears regarding the performance of the electricity grid as increasing numbers of private vehicles come into use.
In his light-hearted talk on these topics, Prof. Palmer will review the old and new technologies, battery energy storage and the electricity grid challenges of moving to largely electrified personal transportation. He will use solid but basic engineering principles, some of which may have been left unused since our undergraduate days
