Engineers Ireland -Technical Analysis of concrete blocks

17th January 2022 8:00 pm

In this presentation, Dr Robbie Goodhue discusses the technical analysis of concrete blockwork. In 2017 an expert Government report found that almost 6,000 homes across Donegal, Mayo, Sligo and Clare were affected by defective concrete blockwork attributed to excess mica or pyrite. The degradation of concrete blocks highlights the need for detailed laboratory analysis of both the raw materials and the manufactured building materials.

This presentation will:

  1. explain the procedures used in Irish standard IS 465 to assess the risk of degradation of concrete blocks
  2. provide opinion on the current knowledge gaps and
  3. propose new methods for assessment of concrete block durability.
