CIBSE - Drilling for minewater heat schemes: How to end up in hot water

11th January 2022 6:30 pm

With the UKs drive towards Net Zero local authorities are looking to unlock the heat within our historical coal mine network, to transform the homes and workplaces of the future. With heating accounting for 40% of energy use in the UK, mine water heat could improve the sustainability of the places where we live and work.

Coalfields exist across Great Britain and it is estimated that 25% of homes and businesses in the UK are located above former coal mines and with minewater temperatures ranging from 10 - 20°C the potential for carbon savings are vast.

However, tapping into to this resource is not a straight forward process and presents many technical challenges that could make projects unviable and too risky to undertake. With limited knowledge in this new market with very little guidance to follow what risks do contractors and their clients face? What should they be planning for?

The aim of this seminar is to provide a ‘lessons learnt’ from the projects undertaken so far, the successes and the challenges, with the aim to help share knowledge to others in this new emerging market.
