IET - Battery Powered Trains with Fast Charging
14th June 2021 7:30 pm
This talk follows on from Pete Mason’s presentation in January 2020 in which he looked at the challenges of replacing diesel engines with batteries and electric motors.
With the choice of Lithium-Ion battery made, and some typical branch-line routes examined, the next stage is to work out how to safely deliver substantial re-charge from the trackside into the batteries whilst on a ten-minute layover, involving very high current power transfer via third and fourth rails.
This requires the considerations of safety, electrical interference, and human interference to be adequately addressed and converted into systems that are reliable and largely self-controlling.
