IMarEST - WEBINAR: Decarbonisation and Alternative Fuelled Ships

27th May 2021 5:30 pm

The International Maritime Organisation has set the initial IMO GHG strategy to reduce the GHG emission by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. Complete decarbonisation or zero emission of GHG is the final target. A series of regulations for NOx, SOx, EEDI, etc. are in place, and different hardware solutions are being implemented, such as SCR, EGR, Scrubber, Low-sulphur fuels, etc. However, these developments may not lead to the final target of zero emission. In the interim, the use of alternative fuels is on the increase to attain the IMO initial targets.

This presentation discusses LNG, Methanol, LPG, Ammonia and Hydrogen as alternative fuels. An overview of LNG and Methanol fuelled ships that are already in service, and ships running on the other alternative fuels that are being developed, is made. Some concept designs of zero emission ships are also given.
