IMechE - An introduction to cavitation phenomenon in centrifugal pumps

Cavitation is one of the leading causes of premature centrifugal pump failure which manifests itself as excessive noise and vibration, performance deterioration and eventually seal, bearing and impeller damage.
Therefore, a robust understanding of cavitation phenomenon is essential for system designers and users who are dealing with this type of pump. This includes understanding the design factors that should be considered when selecting and sizing a centrifugal pump, knowing the deteriorating effect that cavitation can have on a pump’s functionality and understanding the ways to detect, avoid and sometimes manage the cavitation.
